Counting of the Omer
Back in 2016, I did a series of blog posts on the Counting of the Omer. Each day, for the forty-nine days of the Omer, I posted a short article about that particular day and its meaning using the traditional assignment of sefirot (divine emanations) for that day. It only took me five years after that to realize that I should have created a way for readers to come back to those posts in future years as we count the Omer.
As you look through these blog posts, please be aware that the days of the week are not the same for each calendar date year after year. In many of the posts, I referred to a day of the week (including Shabbat) which will be different from the day of that Omer count in most years. Also, a few of the posts refer to secular holidays that fell on that day of the counting of the Omer in 2016; these, too, will be different in most years. However, regardless of the day of the week or the date on the secular calendar, the sefirot associated with a particular day of the Omer stays the same year after year.

How to Count the Omer
The book of Leviticus contains these verses that commands us to count the days and weeks following the beginning of Passover:
"You shall count off – starting the day after the Sabbath from the the day you bring the sheaf (omer) of elevation offering — seven complete weeks until the day after the Sabbath counting fifty days. You shall bring an offering of new grain to Adonai." (Leviticus 23:15-16)
The word omer means "sheaf" – a bundle of grain that was raised as part of the ritual in ancient times.
The rabbis interpreted this passage to mean that we must start counting the days and weeks on the day after the first day of Passover (the word "Sabbath" in the verse is understood to mean "holiday" in the generic sense, not necessarily Shabbat). From that day, we count a total of seven full weeks for a total of forty-nine days. On the day after the forty-ninth day – the fiftieth day – the festival of Shavuot is celebrated, which included "an offering of new grain" when the Temple stood.
For forty-nine days, we make a blessing for Counting the Omer and then ritually recite the number of days and weeks it has been since the beginning of the period. Traditionally this is done at night, the beginning of a new day on the Jewish calendar.
Here is the blessing:
